Frequently
Asked Questions

  • Can a for-profit organization get grant funding?
Yes, but it depends on the type of grant. Most grants are designed for nonprofits, but some funding opportunities exist for small businesses, social enterprises, and research-based for-profit organizations—especially in areas like innovation, technology, and community development.
  • What is a reimbursement grant?
A reimbursement grant requires recipients to spend their own money first on approved expenses. After submitting documentation proving the expenses meet the grant’s guidelines, the organization is reimbursed by the funder.
  • How long does it take to find a grant?
Finding the right grant can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months, depending on your specific needs, industry, and eligibility. Researching funding sources and aligning your mission with available opportunities is key to success.
  • How long does it take to receive grant funding?
The timeline for receiving grant funding varies depending on the funding source. Some grants are awarded within a few months, while others—especially government grants—can take six months to a year for approval and disbursement. Be sure to plan ahead and track deadlines carefully.
  • How long does it take to write a grant?
Grant writing is a time-intensive process. A simple grant may take 20-40 hours, while larger government or foundation grants can require 100+ hours of research, writing, and revisions. Starting early and working with an experienced grant writer increases your chances of success.
  • Can I use a grant for salaries?
It depends on the grant. Some funders allow grants to cover staff salaries, benefits, and administrative costs, while others restrict funds to program-specific expenses. Always read the grant guidelines carefully before applying.
  • Do I have to be a registered organization to apply for grants?
Most grants require applicants to be a registered nonprofit (501(c)(3)), business, or educational institution with a tax ID number. Some grants are available for individuals, but they are less common.
  • What is a UEI number?
A UEI (Unique Entity Identifier) number is a 12-character alphanumeric code assigned by the federal government to identify organizations applying for federal grants. It replaces the previous DUNS number and is required for all federal funding applications. You can obtain a UEI number through SAM.gov.
